sp-art asked: Hi! I'm interested in applying to Ringling but the tuition is too steep. Any thoughts?
Loans, grants, scholarships… Anything to get you there if you really have your heart set on going! That’s how I went about it at least, since my family didn’t have $200k just lying around.
It’s a lot of money to pay back, but honestly, I don’t regret my decision at all! I learned from the very best and grew so much as an artist and as a person during those four years, I feel that it was well worth the expense. Ringling’s name alone gets employers to look at your portfolio, so it’s something to consider.
It also depends on your major, too! Ringling is known for it’s Illustration and Computer Animation majors, so that’s something to keep in mind. The only other suggestion I have is RISD or maybe SCAD. (I’m an Illustration major so I’m not familiar with what might be a better choice for CA majors except for CalArts?????)
If you have the funds, I’d highly suggest taking a tour of the campus to get a better idea of what you’d be getting into. I live in Florida so it was only a few hours drive, but it was super nice to get to see the equipment I’d be working with and talk to some of the professors in person. What’s great is that they all know what they’re doing and with small class sizes, you get lots of personal one-on-one time with them, as well as the usual in-class critique.
You even get a free Macbook laptop in your Freshman year! Totally sweet. There’s also lots of lovely things to do in Sarasota in your free time with friends. (Like the gelato and French pastries place downtown *w*)
The choice is entirely up to you though, and you should seriously weigh your options and what’s best for you before committing to anything, of course. I’m totally biased, so you might wanna ask around and get a better perspective.
Good luck! c:
