Chasin' the Dream

Lessons I’ve learned during my stay at Ringling
Don’t compare your art to others! While it’s alright to get inspiration from another artist that is more skilled than you, it’s not good to dwell on it for too long. Beating yourself down for not being as ‘talented’ as they are won’t get you anywhere! Focus on the skills that you have and practice what you’re good at. It’s a good to explore and challenge yourself, but be careful not to feel inferior to those who might be better at something than you. Who knows? It’s likely that you have a grasp on something that they lack!
Friends will come and go! The key is to remember the good times you’ve had with them and not focus on the bad. Laugh at the jokes you’ve shared, not at the hurt that they left behind. In the end, it’ll be the good memories that stay with you. Who knows? In the future, you might be friends with them again!
Sing as much as you want and sing it loud! There’s nothing that makes me happier than singing my favorite song when no one’s in the house. It helps motivate me, no matter what I’m doing; whether it’s cooking, cleaning, or working on a project that’s due within the week! Who cares if you sing a few sour notes?
Cut out the negativity in your life! While it may be important to be supportive of others and their needs, you have to think of your health and sanity first and foremost. You can’t fix everyone/everything! Though it is nice of you to try.
Spread the cheer! Something as small as a smile or kind gesture could change someone’s day. Try to be nice and open to others whenever you can. People like it when you compliment them. If you like something someone is wearing, let them know! If you appreciate someone for whatever reason, take the time to say so. More often than not, karma will reward you whenever you’re the one having a bad day!
Notice the little things! Stopping to look up at the sky is something that people rarely seem to do, but it’s really nice to take the time to admire the clouds/sunset/weather for a moment. I’ve noticed some great things by just stopping to admire where I am, even if it’s something as silly as a moth, or a pretty leaf, or even the light of the sunset against the building.
Most importantly: LOVE YOURSELF! This is something I think I can say honestly, though it’s a hard concept for some people to grasp! Though you may have some flaws, (everyone does) it’s not good to focus on what is wrong with you. Focus on what is right! Yes I’m fat and often lazy, but I’m organized and optimistic in my life. I love to laugh and just have fun! My art has never been better and I hope to improve even more after I graduate. My life is just beginning and though I may be a little scared, I know that in the end, everything will turn out alright!
These are just lessons that I’ve learned, so they may not work for every situation under the sun, but I hope that someone out there can take a page from my book and learn a little somethin. c:
